EGILL SÆBJÖRNSSON. OUT OF CONTROLL IN VENICE

Icelandic Pavilion—Biennale Arte 2017

Egill Sæbjörnsson, the artist selected to represent Iceland at the 57th Biennale Arte di Venezia, has handed over the creation of the Icelandic Pavilion 2017 to Ūgh and Bõögâr, two Icelandic trolls turned artists. Entitled Out of Controll in Venice, Ūgh and Bõögâr’s project will be curated by Stefanie Böttcher, Director of Kunsthalle Mainz, and is organized by the Icelandic Art Center.
Who has control? Who is guiding our actions, our knowledge, our thoughts, even our powers of imagination? Who is exploiting whom or what? These are questions that Egill Sæbjörnsson consistently grapples with in his work. In phantasmagorical settings, he fills dormant objects with life by overlaying them with animations, projections of light and sounds, allowing their voices to be heard and their characters to be experienced. When an eraser starts flying, stones begin singing or handbags perform a choreographed piece, established relationships and hierarchies are challenged and inverted.
While Ugh and Bõögâr may appear to belong to an archaic world of fantasy, the more time we spend with them in Out of Controll in Venice, the more concrete this seemingly other world becomes. For Sæbjörnsson the trolls are already part of his reality: having encountered Ugh and Bõögâr in Iceland in 2008, wherever Sæbjörnsson goes, they follow. They have even followed in his artistic footsteps, sharing his studio space in Berlin, creating works and presenting exhibitions.
Out of Controll in Venice will extend beyond the Pavilion of Iceland, both in time and space. Ugh and Bõögâr will be infiltrating our lives - no longer just the artist’s, but bit by bit, more and more people will be drawn into their world, encountering everything from the trolls’ thoughts and artistic output, to their music and culinary habits (they enjoy eating humans). The culmination of this encounter – a large-scale, immersive and participatory presentation for Biennale Arte 2017 – will share Iceland’s joyous and terrifying co-existence with the trolls to the wider world, revealing how a simple exchange can evolve into deeper understanding, transforming our perspectives, our ideas of truth and reality, and our relationship with the world.

Chi ha il controllo? Chi guida le nostre azioni, le nostre conoscenze, i nostri pensieri, persino i nostri poteri di immaginazione? Chi sfrutta chi o cosa? Sono domande che Egill Sæbjörnsson affronta costantemente nel suo lavoro. In scenari fantasmagorici, egli riempie di vita gli oggetti dormienti sovrapponendovi animazioni, proiezioni di luce e suoni, permettendo alle loro voci di essere ascoltate e ai loro personaggi di essere vissuti. Quando una gomma inizia a volare, le pietre iniziano a cantare o le borse eseguono un pezzo coreografico, le relazioni e le gerarchie stabilite vengono messe in discussione e invertite.
Mentre Ugh e Bõögâr possono sembrare appartenere a un mondo arcaico di fantasia, più tempo trascorriamo con loro in Out of Controll in Venice, più concreto diventa questo mondo apparentemente diverso. Per Sæbjörnsson i troll fanno già parte della sua realtà: avendo incontrato Ugh e Bõögâr in Islanda nel 2008, ovunque Sæbjörnsson vada, essi lo seguono. Hanno persino seguito le sue orme artistiche, condividendo il suo studio a Berlino, creando opere e presentando mostre.
Out of Controll in Venice si estenderà oltre il Padiglione d'Islanda, sia nel tempo che nello spazio. Ugh e Bõögâr si infiltreranno nella nostra vita – non più solo quella dell'artista, ma un po’ alla volta, sempre più persone saranno attratte nel loro mondo, incontrando tutto, dai pensieri e dalla produzione artistica dei troll, alla loro musica e alle loro abitudini culinarie (si divertono a mangiare gli esseri umani). Il culmine di questo incontro – una presentazione su larga scala, coinvolgente e partecipativa per la Biennale Arte 2017 – condivide la gioiosa e terrificante convivenza dell’Islanda con i troll con il mondo esterno, rivelando come un semplice scambio possa evolvere in una comprensione più profonda, trasformando le nostre prospettive, le nostre idee di verità e realtà, e il nostro rapporto con il mondo.
